A Guide to Domain Names

domain and web hosting

Domain names represent alphanumerical names that make finding an Internet address easier. Basically, domains come in the form of strings of numbers. We can all agree that remembering something like is more difficult than remembering domainname.com. So, domain names are here to simplify the process of finding specific websites.

In order to register a domain name, you have to find a reliable domain registrar. There are two kinds of registrars – resellers and accredit registrars. According to many experts, it’s a better idea to use an accredited domain registrar for this purpose. Keep in mind that hundreds of thousands of domain names are already registered. Almost every registrar has a free tool that allows potential domain name owners to check the availability of the name they are interested in.

Domain names are used as addresses for existing or new websites. In addition, they can be used for email addresses or even for servers. As you are probably aware, every domain name ends with a short abbreviation after the last dot. This abbreviation is known as domain name extension. There are many different domain name extensions. Some of them are generic top level domain name extensions like .info, .travel, .org, .biz, .com, .pro and .info. On the other hand, there are country specific top level domains like .mk, .us, .ca, .co.uk, .fr and more. Every independent countries and territory has a unique county specific top level domain. It’s good to know that there are regional domain extensions too including .london and .eu.

Starting from 2013, the ICANN has introduced a few dozens of new domain extensions. One of the main reasons why they have done this is to allow users to register unique, shorter names for their websites. Some of these new domain extensions that you can use include .photo, .luxury, .guru and .blog.

There are many people who are wondering what the best domain name for their website is. The short answer is that there is no universal answer that can help. However, there are a few things that every new website owner should take into account before registering a domain name. Namely, they should look for a short and memorable name. Of course, this domain name must be meaningful and it also has to use an appropriate extension. For example, you should not build a non-profit organization website which ends in .biz or .guru.
